Landscape and Geospatial Analysis Consultant – aGROWforests Programme (Indonesia)
We are looking for a Landscape and Geospatial Analysis Consultant to provide technical expertise in spatial analysis, ensuring data-driven feasibility studies and monitoring for the aGROWforests programme's transition to landscape-based pepper agroforestry in Indonesia.
About the role
The aGROWforests for Sustainable Spices project is scaling up from individual farm-level pilots to a broader community and landscape-based agroforestry approach.
The purpose of this consultancy is to provide the holistic assessment and spatial monitoring needed for this transition. The Consultant will use advanced geospatial tools (GIS, Remote Sensing, GeoAI) to conduct feasibility studies, support spatial planning, and monitor ecosystem impacts, paving the way for potential carbon credit mechanisms.
Project background
The aGROWforests for Sustainable Spices project is a partnership aimed at creating a sustainable, bio-diverse, and climate-resilient spice sector in Indonesia. The project targets 2,300 farmers in Bangka Belitung and Lampung to increase productivity and income through climate-smart agriculture and agroforestry.
By the end of 2025, over 1,300 farmers have been trained, with 200 transitioning to agroforestry systems. As these systems scale, there is a critical need for landscape and geospatial analysis to support spatial planning, monitor ecosystem changes, and measure environmental outcomes such as carbon sequestration.
Scope of work
The Consultant will provide technical expertise in spatial analysis, monitoring, and impact assessment. The scope includes:
1. Feasibility Study & Spatial Planning
- Conduct comprehensive geospatial analysis (elevation, slope, soil) to assess land suitability and erosion risk for pepper agroforestry.
- Identify suitable crop combinations based on ecological and climatic conditions.
- Produce spatial suitability maps to inform site selection and planning.
2. Spatial Data Acquisition & Management
- Lead the acquisition of spatial data using satellite imagery, remote sensing, and drone-based surveys (including LiDAR).
- Develop and manage spatial databases for baseline assessments and long-term monitoring.
- Apply GeoAI and predictive analytics to integrate multi-source data for yield modeling and risk assessment.
3. Monitoring & Impact Analysis
- Establish geospatial monitoring systems to track land-use change, vegetation dynamics, and agroforestry performance.
- Assess regenerative agroforestry performance on ecosystem services, soil health, and carbon sequestration.
- Support adaptive management by providing timely spatial insights to the project team.
4. Carbon Accounting & Reporting
- Support spatially enabled carbon stock and credit potential assessments.
- Contribute to MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) readiness.
- Produce high-quality maps and knowledge products for sustainability reporting to donors and investors.
Expected deliverables
- Feasibility Study: Technical report on baseline conditions and analytical document identifying priority zones for nature-positive development.
- Spatial Baseline Map Package: Print-ready and digital maps (land use, slope, soil, vegetation) with metadata.
- Agroforestry Design Framework: Framework describing spatial linkages between plots, corridors, and restoration zones.
- Community Implementation Tools: Simple maps for Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) to support community planning.
- Impact Metrics Document: Technical document defining spatial indicators for ecosystem services and carbon sequestration.
- Monitoring & Knowledge Package: A functional geospatial monitoring framework and curated maps/briefs for decision-making and investor reporting.
Target audience / main users
- Project Team: For site selection and adaptive management.
- Donors & Investors: For sustainability reporting and carbon impact verification.
- Communities: For participatory planning and understanding land boundaries.
Required profile
- Education: Advanced degree in Geospatial Science, Remote Sensing, Landscape Ecology, Forestry, or related field.
- Experience: Minimum 5–8 years in geospatial analysis, preferably within agroforestry or land-use planning contexts.
- Technical Mastery: Strong expertise in GIS (QGIS/ArcGIS), Google Earth Engine, satellite imagery, and drone/LiDAR data processing.
- Advanced Analytics: Experience with GeoAI, machine learning, or predictive analytics for environmental impact forecasting.
- Carbon Knowledge: Solid understanding of carbon accounting, sequestration estimation, and MRV requirements.
- Communication: Ability to translate complex spatial data into actionable recommendations for non-technical stakeholders.
- Languages: Excellent written and verbal communication in English and Bahasa Indonesia.
Proposal submission
Interested consultants (individuals or institutions) are invited to submit:
- CV & Cover Letter: Indicating interest and suitability.
- Project Proposal: Covering strategy, workplan, and proposed budget/financial proposal.
Selection criteria
The team will select the consultant based on relevance of experience, understanding of the assignment, proposed methodology, and competitive cost packages.
